Rosa Ana Alija Fernández is Reader in public international law at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences, Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Barcelona. She is also Deputy Coordinator of the Master Degree in Advanced Legal Studies and Coordinator of the Legal clinic on the fight against impunity within the programme Dret al Dret (‘Right to Right’).

She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Observatory on the Enforced Disappearances of Children (University Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain), of the Multidisciplinary Research Network Ibero-American Perspectives on Justice (Ibero-American Institute of The Hague), and of the Business, Human Rights and the Environment Research Group of the University of Greenwich (United Kingdom).

Her main research areas are the international protection of human rights, international criminal law, and transitional justice. During her time at the Geneva Academy, she will explore the legal configuration of guarantees of non-repetition in international human rights law, focusing on their legal nature and autonomous legal effects beyond reparation, taking into consideration the broader framework of general international law.

She has been the principal investigator of the research projects The frontiers of memory. Human rights as a bounding framework to the construction of memory in Colombia (2016-2017) and Atrocities with positive balance? In search of foundations to deal with the involvement of private companies in human rights violations within State reparations programs (2017-2018), funded by the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP).

Rosa Ana Alija Fernández has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Puerto Rico and visiting researcher at the University of Uppsala and at the Research Centre in Latin-American Criminal and Procedural Law of the University of Göttingen. She has collaborated with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in training Rwandan lawyers on universal jurisdiction and with international research teams and networks in the field of transitional justice.

She has a Master Degree in International Studies (University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) and a PhD in Public International Law (University of Barcelona).
