Via its DHRTTDs Directory, the Geneva Human Rights Platform provides a comprehensive list and description of such key tools and databases. But how to navigate them? Which tool should be used for what, and by whom? This interview helps us understand better the specificities of the current highlight of the directory: ECHR Knowledge Sharing Platform
The ECHR-KS platform is unique as it provides in depth and regularly updated analytical and contextualized information on case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
This platform can be easily navigated via search by Convention articles, transversal themes, and key themes. The platform is linked to all the relevant international standards and selected academic commentaries, and importantly, it's being updated every week by the Registry of the Court.
The platform complements other sources such as HUDOC which is the European Court of Human Right’s database of legal texts (judgments, decisions, communicated cases, advisory opinions, and resolutions etc).
A national judge can use the ECHR-KS to review recent case law of the Court under Article 8 (Right to respect for private and family life) in the context of for example data protection.
By exploring how the European Court of Human Rights interprets this right in a particular context, the user can assess whether the national legislation or domestic court decisions are aligned with ECHR standards.
The platform is designed for a broad range of users, including: judges, legal professionals and practitioners, researchers and academics, and public in general.
Its intuitive design and multilingual support make it particularly useful for empowering users with practical knowledge to advance justice and human rights protection at national level.
The ECHR-KS is now available not only in English and French, but also in Romanian, Turkish and Ukrainian. With this the case law of the European Court is accessible and available for more than 300 million people in their native languages. Other language versions of the platform are envisaged. Moreover, the platform regularly expands its content by introducing new Transversal and Key Themes.
