Film Screening and Debate: The Look of Silence

Event

Through Joshua Oppenheimer's work filming perpetrators of the Indonesian killings of 1965–1966, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered and the identity of the men who killed him. The youngest brother is determined to break the spell of silence and fear under which the survivors live, and so confronts the men responsible for his brother's murder - something unimaginable in a country where killers remain in power.

Debate

The Look of Silence (2014, 103 minutes, English subtitles) will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Riccardo Bocco, Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies with:

  • Patricia Spyer, Professor of Anthropology and Sociology, The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies
  • John Austin, Lead Researcher of the VIPRE Initiative, Centre on Conflict Development and Peacebuilding, The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies

Entry is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

This event is part of the trilogy, ‘Paroles de Bourreau’, produced by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the University of Geneva (UNIGE), in partnership with the Geneva Academy, the International film festival and forum on human rights (FIFDH), the UNIGE Cultural Activities, is organized by Professor Sévane Garibian and Professor Riccardo Bocco.
